Episode 094: Golden Granato

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-vg8bq-cb647b

Our talk on women’s hockey continues today as we find ourselves in Japan.  It’s here we meet Cammi Granato on the biggest night of her life: the gold medal game of the 1998 Winter Olympics.  Her story doesn’t begin here, however; it really begins in 1980.  It was then that she watched the US men’s team defeat the USSR en route to their own gold medal.  From that moment she was hooked on hockey, and set off on a path to become a superstar.

Episode 093: Like Lightning – The Manon Rheaume Story

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-g4bf4-c70109

Today, we return to the world of women’s hockey.  It’s been nearly two YEARS to the day since the “Queens of the Rink” series released, and I’d say we’re due

Today’s story is about the first female player to lace up skates for an NHL team.  Manon Rheaume, with the lifelong dream of being a goaltender, became an international sensation when she suited up as a goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992.

That is hardly the full story, however.  Listen in as we tell of her frequent ups-and-downs, and the numerous roadblocks she had to dodge just to be noticed.

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-zw6ah-bdbf22

“Buddy” Maracle made his NHL debut in 1931, suiting up for the New York Rangers.  Like Willie O’Ree twenty-six years later, Maracle was the first at something…except no one seems to know it.

Episode 090: The Great Dust-up of 1947

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-64up6-b94f82

There’s not much in the way of rough hockey these days. Lucky for us we have a time machine. This week we travel back in time to 1947 to New York City.  We munch on some pop corn, and watch the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.  The rumble is one of the greatest fights in hockey history, and by the time it’s over, the two teams could have played an extra period of hockey.

Episode 024: The Death of Alcide Laurin

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-baaec-8b2524

Depending on whom you ask about the death of Joseph “Alcide” Laurin, you’ll get a different answer. Some say his death was purely an accident. Others say he was murdered. While it’s impossible for us to get the answer so long after his passing, we can look at the facts we do have, and make up our own mind. This episode presents the circumstances surrounding his death, and the trial of culprit.
