Episode 090: The Great Dust-up of 1947

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-64up6-b94f82

There’s not much in the way of rough hockey these days. Lucky for us we have a time machine. This week we travel back in time to 1947 to New York City.  We munch on some pop corn, and watch the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.  The rumble is one of the greatest fights in hockey history, and by the time it’s over, the two teams could have played an extra period of hockey.

Episode 083: A Heart Made for War (Part III)

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-5tfzg-aeb084

Doug Smith has just been released from a potential spot with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.  He returns home to Boston with the ever-present question, “What now?” on his mind.  Well, much like a cat with nine lives, Doug’s hockey dream just can’t be laid to rest.

Doug’s old friend, Commander, comes calling once again with an offer to join a team in need of a tough guy.  Without a moment’s hesitation, Doug agrees, and he’s off to Canada to play for the Miramichi Packers.

After his season with the Packers, Doug bounces around, landing where ever someone needs to have a set a knuckles.  All things, good and bad, must come to an end; and so, too, must Doug’s hockey career.  However, just because one thing ends, doesn’t mean something even better isn’t right around the corner.

Follow along as we close out our story on Doug “The Thug” Smith.  We cover his final playing days, his memoir, and even a couple of Hollywood movies you may have heard of…

Episode 081: A Heart Made For War (Part I)

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-psphf-abd96a

Doug “The Thug” Smith was always a small kid.  He was picked on with regularity, and there was little to be done about it.  Then, one day, his dad taught him to box.  When high school came, Doug began lifting weights, and honing his fighting skills.  By his senior year, he was not only 6’2″ 220 lbs, but he was the most feared kid in school…that’s because he’d made a mockery of every bully in the place.

When he graduated, he didn’t have much direction in his life.  He wasn’t sure where to turn.  Then, he began watching hockey with his best friend.  Soon, the two realized, with Doug’s fighting prowess, there might be something he could do on the ice.  So, they began practicing.

This is the first part of the completely unlikely journey of Doug Smith into the ranks of professional hockey as an enforcer.  In this episode, we’ll see Doug’s repeated chance meetings get him in the door of numerous hockey teams, and eventually onto the ice for professional hockey team.  It’s there that he begins to show the minor league world what he’s really made of.
