Episode 107: The Life of Charlie Gardiner (Part I) – Winnipeg

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-dkxfg-ee1f0f

Today we begin a new series on goaltender Charlie Gardiner. We talked about Charlie about forty-or-so episodes ago, but this time we are going far deeper than just his death. This episode covers his early life from Scotland to Winnipeg to Chicago. He grows up playing a myriad of sports, including baseball, rugby, and hockey. We see him turn pro with the Winnipeg Maroons hockey team, which forces him to forfeit his amateur status in all other sports. He meets Myrtle Brooks, the love interest (gotta have one of those, right?) and then, rather suddenly, finds himself on his way out of Winnipeg.

Episode 093: Like Lightning – The Manon Rheaume Story

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-g4bf4-c70109

Today, we return to the world of women’s hockey.  It’s been nearly two YEARS to the day since the “Queens of the Rink” series released, and I’d say we’re due

Today’s story is about the first female player to lace up skates for an NHL team.  Manon Rheaume, with the lifelong dream of being a goaltender, became an international sensation when she suited up as a goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992.

That is hardly the full story, however.  Listen in as we tell of her frequent ups-and-downs, and the numerous roadblocks she had to dodge just to be noticed.

Episode 090: The Great Dust-up of 1947

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-64up6-b94f82

There’s not much in the way of rough hockey these days. Lucky for us we have a time machine. This week we travel back in time to 1947 to New York City.  We munch on some pop corn, and watch the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.  The rumble is one of the greatest fights in hockey history, and by the time it’s over, the two teams could have played an extra period of hockey.

Episode 083: A Heart Made for War (Part III)

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-5tfzg-aeb084

Doug Smith has just been released from a potential spot with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.  He returns home to Boston with the ever-present question, “What now?” on his mind.  Well, much like a cat with nine lives, Doug’s hockey dream just can’t be laid to rest.

Doug’s old friend, Commander, comes calling once again with an offer to join a team in need of a tough guy.  Without a moment’s hesitation, Doug agrees, and he’s off to Canada to play for the Miramichi Packers.

After his season with the Packers, Doug bounces around, landing where ever someone needs to have a set a knuckles.  All things, good and bad, must come to an end; and so, too, must Doug’s hockey career.  However, just because one thing ends, doesn’t mean something even better isn’t right around the corner.

Follow along as we close out our story on Doug “The Thug” Smith.  We cover his final playing days, his memoir, and even a couple of Hollywood movies you may have heard of…

Episode 072: The Death of Charlie Gardiner

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-h6dv7-a02e95

This is the miraculous story of Charlie Gardiner.  Tragedy plagued his life until the day he died, but through it all he remained sturdy.  He won two Vezina Trophies, was elected to the First All-Star Team three times, steered the Chicago Black Hawks to their first Stanley Cup title, is immortalized in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and was taken away far too early.

Episode 071: The Fearless Andy Brown

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-ibzmj-9f796f

My apologies for the short length of the show this week.

Today we are talking about Andy Brown who played for the Detroit Red Wings, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Indianapolis Racers (WHA), as well as a slew of minor league hockey teams.

While Andy might not be remembered for a lot, he is known for, at least, one thing.  During his playing days he was given the nickname “Fearless” by his teammates as he became the last goaltender in the NHL to play without a mask.
