https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-35xvc-b283fa

The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes is back for part two. We talk about the leaders of the league (the league front office, so to speak), the first puck drop, the freezing-out of the league by the white community, and a whole lot more.

Episode 084: The Sons of Slaves (Part I)

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-7apdf-b0dbc0

My sincerest apologies for this episode being so late. Last weekend was crazy, and I hope to never have one like it again.  That said, let’s talk about the episode.

In part one of this new series, we mainly set the stage for the how the black population came to be in Canada.  We will learn about “resettled” free blacks who established colonies; runaway American slaves seeking safety in the North via the Underground Railroad, and Canadian slaves who get their freedom when slavery is outlawed in the British Empire in 1833.

After we establish where everyone came from, we begin to scratch the surface of the greatest hockey league to ever be (almost) completely forgotten: the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes.  Beginning in 1895, the Colored Hockey League sprouted up as the brain child of Henry Sylvester Williams.  He helped kick start the league’s original two teams: the Halifax Eurekas, and the Halifax Stanley.  However, his genius that manifested as the Colored Hockey League may never have been were it not for the help of a wildly established organization that sought to gain equality for the Black People, the Baptist Church.
