Born October 15th, 1935 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Willie O’Ree had a typical Canadian childhood in some respects. In other ways, however, Willie was anything but normal. He grew up playing hockey on his backyard rink, and doing all the things kids do with their friends. The biggest thing that set Willie apart, however, was he was a member of one of only two black families in town. This is the story of the great Willie O’Ree’s childhood, and how his dreams of playing professional hockey were nearly obliterated.
