Teiji Honma was born in 1911 in Sakata, Yamagata, Japan. He would grow up, and as a twenty-five year old, would enroll in university in Manchuria. There, he would join the school hockey team. In 1936, he would join the Japanese National Team in Bavaria, Germany for the IV Winter Olympic Games. While his skills in goal were questionable at best, Teiji would unknowingly be a pioneer of goaltending equipment.
